The Vanishing Middle Class
The Vanishing Middle Class is a collection of medium-based topographic images of the southwest that explore change, decline, and abandonment. The landscapes and architectures depicted in these images explore the economic, sociological and political implications of changes that have left these places blighted or abandoned, while the formal qualities of these images serve to communicate physical deterioration and loss of sense of place. The surfaces in these images suggest states of being while horizons separate these surfaces from the expanse of sky, but also serves to unify the images suggesting a universality of theme that extends beyond the southwest. My intent is that viewers less familiar with the southwest will nonetheless relate these images to their own observations and experience.
